Fontebella Palace Hotel in Assisi, a love story spanning three generations

For the Angeletti dynasty “tourism is not just made of rooms and services. It is made of relationships”.

Assisi – There are businesses that are born from a business plan. And then there are others that are born from a gesture. A simple gesture. Putting a table in front of the Basilica of San Francesco and offering food to travelers arriving in Assisi after the war. The history of the Fontebella Palace Hotel begins like this.

The history of the Fontebella Palace Hotel does not begin with a financial plan. It begins with a family. Because before the brand, before the hotel, before the restaurant, before the wines and labels, there are people who understood a fundamental thing: those who arrive in Assisi are not just looking for a place to visit, they are looking for something to carry inside.

And it is perhaps for this reason that the history of the Angeletti family closely resembles the history of the city that hosts it. Both speak of hospitality. Both speak of encounters. Both speak of humanity.

When, in the post-war period, the first trains returned to bring pilgrims and visitors to the city of San Francesco, the Angeletti family intuited what others would understand many years later: tourism is not just made of rooms and services. It is made of relationships.

Grandfather Ubaldo was an esteemed man, a hard worker with a shop in the city center, but also an affable storyteller and an entertainer well-liked by everyone. The family owned a small vegetable garden located right in front of the majestic Basilica of San Francesco. Grandfather Ubaldo and grandmother Elena intuited that hospitality could not wait, and organized the first snacks on the lawn, available to the faithful.

Thus, in front of the Basilica, a spontaneous form of hospitality was born that still retains the flavor of authentic things today. A lawn, simple food, the desire to share, and the ability to make anyone arriving from afar feel welcomed. From that moment, nothing stopped.

The evolution in the seventies and the noble palace

That vocation found its natural evolution in the 1970s, with the purchase of the noble palace that houses the hotel today. A path guided by the historic sommelier and enologist Giovanni Angeletti, a man whom the memory of the city recalls as an absolute pioneer, a storyteller capable of looking a hundred years ahead of his time. An entrepreneur who did not hesitate to sign promissory notes and ask for the support of close friends to expand that dream piece by piece, buying first the restaurant, then the bar, until covering almost a third of via San Francesco.

The baton of this philosophy was taken by his daughter Elena Angeletti, who inherited that same foresight and propensity to explore the world. Remembering her parents’ teachings, she explains that this approach derives directly from her roots: “Traveling around was about capturing something different from what you saw every day, perhaps making it your own and bringing it back to your territory, always trying to take the best from others”.

In truth, many know how to host, but few know how to welcome; the difference is as subtle as it is decisive. As Elena loves to say: “Hosting means making a space available; welcoming means making a part of oneself available”.

The cultural curiosity that has always distinguished the Angeletti family also finds expression in the spaces of the palace: the historic walls host a permanent exhibition dedicated to the Templars, a documentary and iconographic itinerary known internationally, flanked by an eclectic section of pop art that inserts contemporary elements into the heart of Assisi stone.

The Slow Food philosophy at Il Frantoio restaurant

The attitude toward research is found in the services offered. Where a summer terrace covered with reeds and paved with gravel once stood, today lie the tables of Il Frantoio restaurant, a presidium of Umbrian food and wine culture interpreted according to the dictates of the genuineness of products and the Slow Food philosophy.

Alongside identity catering, the exclusive products of the family are developed: oil, Donna Elena wines, craft beers, and the Ribelle line, which ranges from wine to gourmet sandwiches, an explicit tribute to the rebellious spirit of Saint Francis.

“Food – concludes Elena Angeletti – is essentially culture. We like to eat good things, we like to eat healthy things, and we try to do this for our customers as well: making them try real things, to give them a direction to experience the real Assisi”.

The ancient stones, the rooms of the palace, and the panorama that accompanies the walk toward the Basilica of San Francesco are not just backdrop elements, but fragments of a story that crosses time, guarded with passion and shared every day with those who choose to stop in Assisi.
